About Buy or DIY
BuyOrDIY.com is about you and your projects. You may not have a day, a week, or longer to compare costs and quality, among other variables, when choosing whether to complete a home project yourself, hiring someone to do it for you, or whether to buy, make, or build, some or all of the components for your project. So we help.
I write in-depth about projects that I have built or created, items I have purchased, projects that I have researched, or projects that other reliable and creative people have written about. We compare as many pros and cons on both sides of the “buy or do-it-yourself” coin that we can so that you can benefit from our knowledge and experience.
As an experienced mom, wife, and homeowner, among many other things, I have more years of project successes (and failures) than I care to count. I am an artist, both real-world and digital, photographer, homeschool teacher and college instructor. I have directed two non-profits, been a telecommunications technician, and database developer.
With an IT Management degree, I spent a year in graduate school studying database technologies, then realized that I was hungry for more creative work. My undergrad minor was in English, and I have written, edited, and optimized web content for several years. Currently I enjoy building WordPress websites and optimizing small, local business sites, along with marketing consulting for small businesses.
My oldest son’s nickname is McGyver, and the title is well-earned. His fiance is just as bright and skilled as he is (shh…), and they both work in IT and telecom. My youngest is far more amazing than he realizes yet. He is an artist and a thinker, and is coping with the pain and inconvenience of living with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, a relatively rare connective tissue disorder.
This is to say that my family inspires my creativity and resourcefulness, because believe me, when you have to stay home with a chronically ill child, you are forced to live by your wits. Every day is a new challenge for us.
Equally awesome are my Renaissance-type friends, some of whom you will meet on this blog. Imagine a mother of 7 who makes all of her kids’ clothes, has two blogs, and who finds the time to renovate a country home with her husband while gardening and homeschooling her children. You’ll definitely hear from her, and from another good friend who has supported her parents through their journeys into the great unknown that is Alzheimers. Yet she always finds time to build improvements into her home and to create beautiful art. Both of these women, remarkably, always have time for a friend, and I’m sure they will share some of their best tips and project ideas with you here.
The world is actually full of amazing people, and I am proud to count some of them among my friends and business networking partners. I can’t wait to show you what we can all do, because you can do it, too!
So stay tuned and be sure to subscribe in an RSS reader or via email by signing up in the subscription box to your right. You’ll be glad that you did.
